In our hyper-connected world, the smartphone has become an extension of ourselves. Yet, despite how often we hold these devices, many of us unknowingly follow charging habits that could compromise our safety. While lithium-ion batteries—the powerhouses inside our phones—are designed for efficiency, they are also sensitive to environmental stressors. When these safety limits are pushed, the consequences can be dangerous, ranging from rapid battery degradation to the risk of overheating and, in extreme cases, combustion.

To ensure your device remains safe and long-lasting, here are five common charging mistakes you should stop making today.
1. Using Unauthorized or Low-Quality Chargers
The temptation to use a cheaper, third-party charger is common, but it often comes with hidden risks. Original or certified chargers are engineered specifically to regulate the voltage and current delivered to your device’s battery. Cheap, unbranded, or counterfeit chargers often lack these critical safety circuits. Using them can result in unstable power delivery, which stresses the battery and significantly increases the risk of overheating and short circuits.
2. Charging in High-Temperature Environments
Heat is the primary enemy of lithium-ion batteries. Charging your phone in direct sunlight, inside a parked car on a hot day, or near heat sources like stoves and heaters is dangerous. High ambient temperatures force the internal chemistry of the battery to work under duress, accelerating degradation and increasing the risk of “thermal runaway”—a condition where the battery’s temperature rises uncontrollably.
3. Using the Phone While It Is Charging
We’ve all done it: scrolling through social media or playing a graphically intensive game while our phone is plugged into the wall. Doing this creates a “parasitic load.” The phone’s processor generates heat while running heavy apps, and the charging process generates its own heat. When combined, these two sources can make the device excessively hot, straining the battery and reducing its overall lifespan.
4. Charging Under Pillows or Blankets
Never, under any circumstances, should you place your phone under a pillow, blanket, or on a bed while it is charging. These soft surfaces act as insulators, trapping the heat that naturally dissipates during the charging cycle. Without proper airflow, the temperature can skyrocket. Charging on a hard, flat surface like a wooden desk or a countertop is essential for heat dissipation.
5. Keeping Heavy Cases on During Charging
While protective cases are great for preventing screen cracks and body dings, they can become a hindrance during charging. Many bulky, thick, or rubberized cases are designed for impact absorption, not thermal management. These cases can trap heat inside the phone chassis. If you notice your phone getting unusually warm while charging, try removing the case to help the device “breathe” and stay cool.
Pro-Tip: Recognize the Warning Signs
While normal charging might make a phone feel slightly warm, there is a clear difference between mild warmth and a dangerous battery issue. If your phone becomes too hot to touch, continues to heat up even when idle, shows signs of swelling or bulging, or continues to get hot long after being unplugged, stop using it immediately.
By simply being mindful of where, how, and with what equipment you charge your phone, you can significantly reduce the risks and keep your device—and your home—safer. When in doubt, always use the original accessories that came with your device and keep your charging setup in a cool, well-ventilated space.
